The words had come out of Rafe’s mouth before he’d really thought about them. Maybe it was some kind of protective mechanism to cover up what he was really thinking about. That Isobel was single. That there was nothing to anchor her on the other side of the world, other than a job.

There would be many, many jobs available for someone with her abilities right here in Balclutha. And that would mean he could see more of her. There could be other occasions when he could sit and share a glass of wine with her and talk about life and...

And be reminded, yet again, of how he’d stuffed up the best thing that had ever happened to him? That surprised expression currently on Isobel’s face could quickly morph into wariness, couldn’t it? What was he thinking? And after he’d suggested the wine instead of a cup of tea to try and soften the unpleasantness of their shared memories.

He pasted a grin onto his face. ‘Just kidding... I know you’ve got more than enough demands on your time right now. But you were brilliant this morning. You even picked up what was probably a silent myocardial infarction on old Mrs Maloney when you spotted the changes on her routine ECG. No wonder she’s been so short of breath lately.’

Isobel didn’t seem to register the praise. She was looking thoughtful rather than pleased.

‘Are you looking for a full-time practice nurse?’ she asked. ‘Because if it was part-time I’d have time to spend with Daisy every day and there’ll be other things I have to do, I expect. Like decisions for the house and legal stuff.’

Rafe stared at her. ‘Would you really consider it?’

Was this a step in the wrong direction? It would mean spending even more time in Isobel’s company. Working with her, in fact, which was how they’d met in the first place. Did he want to do that?

No.

Yes...

‘The hours you worked today were great,’ Rafe said. ‘I know everybody would be thrilled if you could do that Monday to Friday. And I’m in charge of employing someone so we can figure out what would work best for you. But...are you sure?’

‘I meant it when I said how good it had been today to be able to focus on stuff that’s easy to handle. It almost felt like I had a bit of control over my life which has been rather lacking lately. Having a routine would probably be even better. But are you sure? Was today typical for what your practice nurse needs to be able to do?’

Was he sure?

Not exactly. He was confused, to be honest. There were feelings being stirred that he’d successfully kept buried for a very long time. He’d said too much already too, not just telling Isobel that she’d been the one he’d loved but admitting that he’d only ever slept with her sister that one time. He’d thought he’d lost everything he’d ever had with Isobel Matthews. He hadn’t even expected her
